Since this is my blog and I am a mother, I feel as though I can use this forum to boast a little bit about the young man my eldest son is becoming. I have seen him through his "baby" years and helped "ready" him for being the person he is today so I feel as though this post fits well on this blog.
Last spring (or perhaps early summer) PB came to me to discuss his hair. At the time it had been about 18 months since he'd last had it cut and it was just past his shoulders. He was weighed down by the thickness of it and was concerned about the additional heat it might saddle him with once the summer weather really kicked in; little did he know we wouldn't have a really hot summer. He isn't a ponytail kind of guy the way his dad was when he was a teen.

I asked if he wanted me to make an appointment for him to have his hair cut and he admitted that he really did not because he had been hoping to have it long enough to donate to be made into wigs for children living with cancer. WOW! This mama had to fight back the tears while I asked him if he was sure! I wanted to remind him that it is a big commitment to have all of his hair removed.

Because he is 11 years old and because I know that many children might change their mind at the last minute, I didn't let anyone know we were collecting for his cause until after the event occurred. We spoke with my hair stylist at Trendz Hair Salon (although it's been so long since I last visited her for myself, perhaps she doesn't want that last part admitted) and made plans to see her in her salon for the big cut.

She sectioned it off in small amounts to get the very most length we could (he needed 10 inch pieces) while leaving him with a little hair to work with.
She cut each section and then styled his hair.

Now my young wonder-man has collected over $350.00 to go with the hair he is donating AND another family from his class at the Waldorf school he attends has hair they want to submit as well. All-in-all I am pretty excited to admit that this young man is my son and A Child's Voice Foundation is lucky he is the person he is.

PS - Now SB is planning to grow his hair again and donate it! How did I get so blessed??

What a great kid. I thought your post was going to be about how I let my son grow his hair and his independence. OMG how refreshing and his hair is beautiful. What a great boy and a lucky proud Mom!
I am now following you. What a great post. Also we did Waldorf in the summer for a bit. I liked their environment very much and wish I could afford it here.

How wonderful Sam! Of course you are allowed to brag. I'm sure he got his giving spirit from you.
I think it is so important to teach our children empathy and giving at a young age and it is evident that you did a wonderful job of that with your sons.
